Recently critisism of EA started to grow (scandal with Nick Bostrom, AGI doomerism, reveal of SBF's ponzi scheme, etc.) and I started to think about it - am I EA or not? And I realized that my views are more accurate expressed not by Effective Alruism philosophy but Effective Accelerationism ideology. Here is why.
First of all, I disagree with a major premise of EA that altriusm a) can be effective and b) should be effective. Cost / benefit analysis to donations is straightforward approach but can we accurately evaluate benefits? For instance, what's better - to save now 1000 lives or accelerate some drug discovery and save in future 20 years 10000 lives? Saving 1000 lives from malaria is of course good but I argue that it's probably not the most effective way to benefit humanity. And even if it's so, the most efficient fighter with malaria is economic growth but not just nets.. So I think labelling EA approach as the most effective is not correct for me, despite of ANY economical arguments which they make (philosophical and political economical arguments say otherwise).
Also I think that philanthropy and donating is personal thing and it's up to person decide how they spend their money - it's economical right for everybody to donate and support initiaves which they like the most. And that's okay. The world is big and every sphere like art or animals care or just nice urbanism has own room in the world. So there is no the "right" approach to donations - you should donate in what attracts you the most. And because we don't know what is truly the most beneficial impact to society this freedom of donations becomes obvious right thing to do.
So, now I try to convince you that Effective Accelerationism (a/ecc) is more appeleaing and important topic than Effective Altriusm. As I undestand there are 3 pillars of e/acc:
This agenda sounds really exciting for me and looks like real vision for humankind: it's challenging, it's absolutely beneficial to humanity, it's exciting and it seems real!
And so, should we all immediately start to donate and support e/acc? No, because there can't be one right/effective/whatever thing to support. But choosing between EA and e/acc I'd pick the last one and I advise you to do the same!
