What should we build?

In last post I wrote about why should we build. But now I ask myself what should (can) we build? I think it's important question for early career people like me)

So, I define 6 types of "buildings":

  1. product
  2. company
  3. social institute
  4. technology
  5. scientific knowledge
  6. art

The first one is simple and my favorite - now product approach is becoming dominated in tech and even non-tech world because it establishes the right approach to the business. The main aim of product is to give a value for users (clients) and that's it. More value = more profits. But creating a value is the mix of art and data ("science") that makes this craft is not obvious but interesting. Example is activity of any product manager at e.g. Google.

The second one is company and that's close to product but company is more broader and difficult building which demands also administrative skills. Example is the founding of Amazon by Jeff Bezos.

The third one I think is underrated because it's not sexy like startup but in terms of the scale of the good, it may even outweigh startups. I define 2 types of social institutes - government program and non-profit. The great examples of non-profits are Our World in Data and New Science. The example of government program is a European Green Deal.

The technology is built by inventors and engineers. It seems that invention as career path is underestimated in our world. The great example of new technology is a creating of multi-usage vertical rocket by Elon Musk.

The scientific knowledge is crafted by scientists. The main aim of this activity is often to just satisfy own curiosity. The contemporary example is a discovery of gravitational waves.

Art is about creating nice but not useful staff which impress people like Banksy does.

What are you type of builder? What does excite you more? Why? These questions help you to choose right path for you.
