I believe that we are entering an era when humanity can create history for itself. This may sound silly, but let's think about it.
Economics has been trying for decades to explain the explosive economic growth that began 200 years ago. It is worth recognizing that all the factors that somehow ensured this economic growth were predetermined by socio-economic prerequisites - humanity did not influence them in any way. Naturally, such great minds as Einstein or Bohr moved science forward individually, but the conditions under which industrial and scientific progress was born occurred "historically" (confluence of several socio-cultural-economic trends). That is, people consciously did not create the prerequisites for an economic boom, moreover, they did not even think about it.
Now a prescriptive branch of economic history is emerging - progress studies, which allows answering not only the question "what affects progress", but also the question "what can or should we do now to accelerate progress". This is a whole science that studies and develops the institutional design of new organizations that will effectively use the current resources of talent and finance for making more progress. And progress in progress movement (sorry for the tautology) is already quite noticeable - many science support institutions have emerged recently that promise to reinvent the structure of science funding, which will allow scientists to do more risky, and therefore promising things.
In this way, we will be able to question any current institution and rebuild it, guided by the goal of accelerating human progress (that is, creating innovative and socially useful things). Of course, there are political and cultural restrictions. But as the new philosophy of progress spreads and awareness is growing, these restrictions will loosen and more institutions will be rebuilt. This means that we will be able to create our own "future history" with our own hands, which has never happened before!
